Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2012 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of the longest continuous tenures by a Nigerian state governor in that era. He first won election in 2003, defeating incumbent Prince Abubakar Audu, was re-elected in 2007 (later nullified by the courts), and won the subsequent 2008 re-run. He was succeeded by his brother-in-law, Captain Idris Wada, in January 2012.
Before politics, Idris was a successful businessman who built interests in construction, furniture manufacturing, and hospitality. He founded Ibro Trading Company and established hotels, including ventures in Sokoto and the Grand Ibro Hotel. Born in Idah, Kogi State, in 1949, he spent part of his early life in Onitsha and Kano and later studied at King’s Commercial College in Buguma and the University of Abuja.His time in office is remembered by supporters for infrastructure projects including the Confluence Stadium, a specialist hospital, road dualisation in Lokoja, water schemes, housing estates, and primary school construction across the state. He also drew national attention in 2006 when three of his daughters survived the deadly ADC Airlines Flight 53 crash near Abuja—one of only a handful of survivors. In April 2024, he lost his son, Mohammed Ibrahim Idris, a former House of Representatives member, who died in Abuja shortly after Eid prayers.
Idris has largely stayed out of active politics since leaving office, focusing on business and philanthropy. Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has previously described him as a father figure and statesman whose inclusive approach left a lasting mark on the Confluence State.At the time of writing, the reported death remains unconfirmed.
