Breaking: Tinubu Sacks Finance Minister Wale Edun, Housing Minister Dangiwa, Elevates Taiwo Oyedele

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has relieved Mr. Wale Edun of his duties as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, appointing tax reform architect Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as his successor.

The reshuffle, announced Tuesday via a memo from Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, also saw the removal of Minister of Housing and Urban Development Ahmed Musa Dangiwa. Oyedele, who had been serving as Minister of State for Finance since his swearing-in in March, steps up to the substantive role, while Muttaqha Darma was named as the new Minister-designate for Housing.

The change comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s economy following bold reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification. Edun, a respected investment banker and long-time ally of the President, had been central to navigating these turbulent transitions, overseeing efforts to restore macroeconomic stability, attract foreign investment, and manage debt. However, persistent challenges such as high inflation, naira volatility, and public discontent over rising living costs appear to have prompted the leadership shift.

Oyedele, widely regarded as Nigeria’s preeminent “tax man,” chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. His panel delivered landmark recommendations aimed at simplifying Nigeria’s complex tax system, eliminating multiple taxation, boosting revenue generation without crippling businesses, and improving ease of doing business. Many observers view his elevation as a clear indication that revenue mobilization and fiscal discipline will now take center stage in the administration’s economic agenda.

In a statement reacting to the development, sources close to the Presidency described the move as a “strategic recalibration” to accelerate implementation of the tax reforms and drive the next phase of economic recovery. Supporters on social media hailed the decision as forward-looking, with several noting that the transition had been anticipated for weeks.

Edun’s tenure, though marked by technical expertise and international credibility, faced criticism from segments of the public who felt the benefits of reforms had yet to trickle down to ordinary Nigerians. There has been no official comment from Edun at the time of this report, but insiders wish him well in future endeavors.President Tinubu is expected to formally receive the new ministers and issue directives on priority areas, with a focus on revenue growth, infrastructure funding, and private sector-led growth. This minor reshuffle underscores the administration’s willingness to make decisive changes as Nigeria grapples with the dual tasks of economic stabilization and delivering tangible relief to citizens. Further details on handover processes and policy direction are anticipated in the coming days.
