A woman identified as Hafsatu Yusuf has died after giving birth to quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano State.
The quintuplets were delivered on March 25, 2026, at the hospital, where both the mother and the newborns were placed under intensive medical care.
The development was confirmed on Thursday, March 26, 2026, by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, during a telephone interview.
According to him, Yusuf passed away around 2 a.m. on March 26, 2026, following complications from childbirth. She reportedly experienced severe and persistent bleeding after delivering five babies—three boys and two girls—despite efforts by medical personnel to save her.
“She had been bleeding since after delivery, and all efforts by doctors to control the situation were unsuccessful,” he said.
The deceased has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites at her residence in Hotoro.
K/Na’isa appealed to the public to support the newborns with essential items, including baby formula, as they continue to receive care.
He, however, confirmed that the quintuplets are in stable condition and are currently under close medical supervision at the hospital.
The incident occurred barely a day after the Kano State Government announced that it had taken full responsibility for the medical care of both the mother and her babies following the successful delivery.
In an earlier statement, the Ministry of Health had disclosed that the quintuplets were delivered safely and placed under intensive care alongside their mother.
The husband of the deceased, Malam Salisu Nufi’u, had earlier expressed gratitude to the state government for its timely intervention.
The government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening maternal and child healthcare services in the state, with a focus on reducing mortality rates.
