President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, while also relieving the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, and the Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike, of their duties.
In a press statement on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the dissolved council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included notable members such as Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.
Truth Live News gathered that the council bypassed established protocols in the controversial appointment of Prof. Odoh as Vice Chancellor, a situation that escalated tensions between the university’s Senate and its leadership.
The Federal Government intervened, citing the council’s disregard for the university’s governing laws. A spokesperson noted the government’s commitment to ensuring due process and accountability within tertiary institutions.
Similarly, President Tinubu approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State. Salami’s suspension of the Vice Chancellor, allegedly in breach of prescribed procedures, was deemed unlawful. Despite directives from the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the suspension, Salami reportedly refused, engaging in abusive conduct toward ministry officials.
The Federal Government reiterated the importance of adherence to institutional laws, emphasizing that university councils must focus on fostering smooth operations rather than creating unnecessary distractions.
President Tinubu affirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the country’s educational standards, warning against acts that undermine the integrity of academic institutions.
