Thomas Tuchel’s team suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss to a merciless Eintracht Frankfurt on a punishing afternoon in the Bundesliga.
As the defending champions tried harder and harder to get back into the game, Bayern was outclassed by an inspired home team that jumped out to a three-goal lead and then found it easier and easier to pick off their opponents.
Before the trip to Frankfurt, Bayern’s renowned defense had only allowed nine goals in the Bundesliga this season. However, that defense crumbled against a ferocious home onslaught, exposing Min-Jae Kim and Dayot Upamecano and forcing both full-backs to be changed at the half.
Frankfurt is currently only two points behind Hoffenheim in the race for European qualifying, while Bayern missed the opportunity to take the lead. This comes after Frankfurt had a slow start to the season.
With a game remaining, they are three points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen following the cancellation of their match last week. However, if Xabi Alonso’s team wins against Stuttgart, they would take a six-point lead before Bayern plays Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
Though the crushing defeat shows that Bayern Munich is far from unbeatable—they suffered their first league defeat of the year—the Red Devils can very well be cursing the Eagles for providing Kane and company with extra fuel in a crucial match at Old Trafford.
