Chelsea defeated Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge with an incredible comeback, preserving their hopes of winning the EFL Cup.
After a blunder by Kieran Trippier, Mikhailo Mudryk’s injury time equalizer was needed to force penalties. Trippier then missed the mark in the ensuing shootout, and Chelsea won when Dorde Petrovic stopped Matt Ritchie’s kick.
After a lengthy run from his own half, Callum Wilson’s elegant finish gave Newcastle the lead after 16 minutes. Wilson looked to have lost possession of the ball on the edge of the box, but Benoit Badiashile’s clumsy touch allowed Wilson to curl a shot past Dorde Petrovic with the outside of his foot.
Connor Gallagher gave the hosts the lead after only seven minutes of play as they dominated possession. Subsequently, Nicolas Jackson pulled a shot just wide and Bruno Guimaraes cleared a Raheem Sterling effort off the line. After coming on as a replacement in the second half, Christopher Nkunku finally made his debut, although Chelsea struggled to score goals until Mudryk’s late intervention.
Chelsea, Middlesbrough, and Fulham all move on to the semi-finals. When Liverpool plays West Ham United tomorrow, the fourth semi-finalist will be determined.
