The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to win Super Bowl 59, denying the Chiefs a historic third consecutive championship. The Eagles’ defense played a crucial role, sacking quarterback Patrick Mahomes six times and intercepting him twice.
Mahomes, who had gone 298 pass attempts without throwing an interception, was under pressure throughout the game. The Eagles’ victory was a revenge of sorts, having lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57 two years ago. Quarterback Jalen Hurts led the Eagles to victory, throwing a 46-yard touchdown pass to seal the win.
The Chiefs struggled to get going, earning just one first down in the first half. The Eagles, on the other hand, opened the scoring with Hurts’ “tush push” play and never looked back. The team’s defense took charge, sacking Mahomes on successive plays and returning an interception for a touchdown.
Despite a late rally, the Chiefs were unable to overcome the deficit. Mahomes threw touchdown passes to Xavier Worthy and DeAndre Hopkins in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. The Eagles’ victory marked their second Super Bowl win, having first won in 2018.
Mahomes took responsibility for the loss, citing his turnovers as a key factor. “Credit to the Eagles, they played better than us from start to finish,” he said. “I’ve just got to take all the blame for that. Those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game, and they capitalized on them.”
