Akoko – Edo, Edo State

The political atmosphere in Edo State reached a fever pitch as Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki led a vibrant campaign in Akoko-Edo, rallying support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the September 21 governorship election. The event, which took place at the Igarra Open Field, saw the governor accompanied by PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, his running mate, Osarodion Ogie Esq., and other prominent party leaders, all greeted by a sea of enthusiastic supporters.

Truth Live News reports that Governor Obaseki, while addressing the mammoth crowd, expressed deep appreciation for Akoko-Edo’s unwavering support for the PDP. He highlighted the area’s historical marginalization and his administration’s efforts to rectify this by offering key positions and initiating projects like the polytechnic. He lauded the intellectual prowess of the local population and emphasized the need for competent and empathetic leadership, which he believes Ighodalo and Ogie embody.

Obaseki also spotlighted Akoko-Edo’s rich mineral resources, announcing plans to secure mining licenses and attract investors under Ighodalo’s leadership, promising a brighter, more prosperous future for the community.

Deputy Governor, Engr. Godwins Omobayo, echoed Obaseki’s sentiments, thanking him for the opportunities given to Akoko-Edo, particularly the establishment of the polytechnic. Omobayo dismissed rumors of an endorsement for the APC candidate by a local group, dismissing them as mere distractions from those desperate for money. He urged the people of Akoko-Edo to show their gratitude by voting massively for the PDP on September 21, ensuring the continuation of progress.

Local Government Chairman, Tajudeen Alade Suleiman, and PDP stalwart, Hon. Tunde Akogun, also praised Obaseki’s administration and the leadership qualities of Ighodalo. Akogun, who had retired from politics, stated that Obaseki’s achievements and the strength of the PDP’s candidate brought him back into the fold. He criticized the APC candidate, suggesting he is heavily reliant on his political godfathers, unlike Ighodalo, whom he described as a capable leader.

Dr. Asue Ighodalo, addressing the massive gathering, expressed his gratitude for the turnout and emphasized Akoko-Edo’s importance as the oldest local government in the state. He outlined his vision to rejuvenate the local economy through tourism, agriculture, and especially the development of the area’s abundant mineral resources. He reassured the crowd that under his leadership, Akoko-Edo would become a hub of wealth and opportunity.

Ighodalo urged the people to reject the darkness and embrace the light by voting for the PDP. He confidently assured them of a fair election, noting that President Bola Tinubu has committed to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election in Edo State.

The event also featured the presence of key PDP figures, including the state chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, and Rev. Olu Martins, Deputy Director of the Asue Ogie Campaign Council, among others. The rally was a testament to the growing momentum behind the PDP’s campaign, with youth, market women, and local community members showing strong support for the party’s vision for Akoko-Edo.
