The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total and indefinite strike across three Lagos State-owned universities, effective immediately, over the state government’s failure to implement a key labor agreement.
The affected institutions are Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology.
The union announced the strike in a statement issued on Tuesday, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum it had issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31. The decision was taken at separate branch congresses of the union.
ASUU said its principal demand remained the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and other welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.
The union said a final warning issued on September 10 also produced no concrete response before the September 13 deadline expired. ASUU described the action as a “rescue mission for Lagos State education,” adding that the strike had the full backing of its national leadership.
ASUU said the strike was not directed at the management of the three universities and commended them for their efforts towards the domestication of the agreement, while appealing to traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni associations and civil society groups to support its demand.
The union said it remained open to negotiations and would suspend the action once the outstanding matters were satisfactorily addressed, urging students, parents and other members of the university community to remain calm and law-abiding during the dispute.
The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities at the three institutions until the dispute is resolved.
