Burkina Faso Turns to Amir Abdou for Stallions Revival After AFCON Exit

The Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF) has officially named Amir Abdou, a 53-year-old Franco-Comorian, as the new head coach of the Stallions. This comes after Burkina Faso’s early exit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Truth live news reports.

Abdou replaces Brama Traore, whose contract ended following the disappointing campaign. The federation said his selection followed a “rigorous examination” of candidates.

In a statement, the FBF said:

“Following a call for applications and careful review of profiles, Abdou Amir has been selected to take charge of the national team. His experience and tactical discipline are exactly what the Stallions need.”

Abdou is no stranger to African football. He led Comoros to their first-ever AFCON knockout stage in 2021 and guided Mauritania to a landmark victory over Algeria at AFCON 2023. At club level, he won two Mauritanian league titles with FC Nouadhibou and most recently coached Hassania Agadir in Morocco.

Commenting on his new role, Abdou said:

“I am honoured to lead Burkina Faso. My priority is to stabilise the team, build cohesion, and prepare for the World Cup qualifiers and AFCON 2027. We must be ready to fight every match.”

The Stallions, once AFCON finalists in 2013 and semi-finalists in 2017 and 2021, have faced recent inconsistency. Federation officials are hopeful Abdou’s approach, rooted in organisation, unity, and tactical clarity, will bring the needed stability.

His first matches are expected in the March 2026 international window, though opponents have yet to be confirmed..
