Messi Suffers Hamstring Fatigue Scare Ahead of World Cup

Lionel Messi has been diagnosed with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, raising concerns just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Inter Miami confirmed the development in a statement released on Monday, May 25, after the Argentine superstar was forced off during Sunday’s Major League Soccer clash against Philadelphia Union.

Messi exited in the 73rd minute of Miami’s thrilling 6-4 victory after clutching the back of his left leg. Although the 38-year-old appeared to walk normally as he headed to the dressing room, the incident immediately sparked fears over his fitness ahead of the World Cup.

“After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” Inter Miami said in the statement issued on May 25.

“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”

The club, however, did not provide a definite date for his return, leaving uncertainty over his condition as Argentina prepares to defend its World Cup title in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Argentina are scheduled to begin their campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, five days after the tournament kicks off.

Messi has carefully managed his workload since joining Inter Miami in 2023, with the club frequently resting him during congested schedules.

Major League Soccer is currently on break because of the World Cup.

Although Messi has yet to officially confirm his participation in the tournament, he is widely expected to feature in what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.

Argentina are expected to announce their final squad next week before travelling to the United States for warm-up friendlies against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.
