Terry Venables, an ex-manager of England, has passed away at the age of 80.

His family issued the following statement on Sunday afternoon, confirming the news.

The statement reads, “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.

“We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.”

Venables also spent time in charge of Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Barcelona and Tottenham during his managerial career.

The League Managers Association chief executive Richard Bevan said: “The LMA is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of LMA member and former LMA President Terry Venables. Our thoughts are very much with Yvette and all of Terry’s family at this time.”

The most well-known aspect of Venables’ career was his tenure at Tottenham, where he was a manager in 1991 and an FA Cup winner in 1967.

After joining the team from Chelsea, he made 141 appearances overall and scored nine goals before leaving to play for Queens Park Rangers in 1969.

After playing for more than 500 games, Venables started his coaching career at Crystal Palace in 1976 and came back to Loftus Road four years later.

Before taking the Hoops to the 1982 FA Cup final, he elevated the Eagles from the third level to the top flight.

His first significant trophy came from Barcelona, as he helped the Spanish team win the Copa de Liga in 1985 and the La Liga championship in 1985.

After Steaua Bucharest defeated the team in the 1986 final, Venables just lost the opportunity to lead the team to what would have been their first European Cup.

A year later, he returned to Spurs and guided the team to the previously mentioned FA Cup triumph. In 1994, he succeeded Graham Taylor as England manager.

After leading England to the Euro 96 semi-finals, when they were defeated by Germany on penalties, Venables took command of Australia and started his second stint at Palace, which came before stints at Middlesbrough and Leeds.

In 2006, he would rejoin the Three Lions coaching staff as Steve McClaren’s assistant.
