The President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, has paid tribute to Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a “pillar of democracy” and a “steadfast supporter” of The Gambia.

Barrow visited Buhari’s hometown of Daura in Katsina State on Friday to offer condolences to the former president’s family.

He was received by Katsina State’s Secretary to the Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Garba-Faskari, and members of the Buhari family.

“President Buhari stood by us and the Gambian people to ensure that our democratic mandate was fully respected,” Barrow said. “To me, he was more than a leader, every time I saw Buhari, I saw a father, a brother, and an uncle standing before me.”

Barrow praised Buhari’s efforts in promoting peace and democracy across West Africa through ECOWAS, the African Union, and globally. “He stood for democracy, freedom, and justice,” he added, extending condolences to the Buhari family and the Nigerian people.

Garba-Faskari said the visit reflected “true African brotherhood” and noted that Buhari’s contributions to peace and stability would never be forgotten.

Yusuf Buhari, son of the late president, expressed gratitude for the gesture, calling it a sign of the enduring ties between Nigeria and The Gambia and his father’s lasting legacy on the continent.
