Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has been left devastated after the bodies of his wife and two young children were recovered from the rubble of their home following the catastrophic earthquakes that struck Venezuela.
Trejo’s family had been missing since June 24 after their apartment building in Playa Grande, La Guaira State one of the areas hardest hit by the twin earthquakes collapsed during the disaster.
Rescue teams spent more than 70 hours combing through the wreckage in a desperate search for survivors.
Authorities eventually recovered the bodies of Trejo’s wife, Yanina Maranella, and the couple’s two children, Aarón and Ainhoa, bringing the heartbreaking search to a tragic conclusion.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the football community, with Trejo’s club and fellow players paying tribute to the Argentine defender while offering their condolences and support during one of the darkest moments of his life.
The devastating earthquakes have claimed numerous lives and caused widespread destruction across parts of Venezuela, leaving thousands of families grieving and communities struggling to recover from the disaster.
The powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, triggered widespread destruction across Venezuela, with La Guaira among the worst-affected regions.
Thousands of buildings were destroyed, while rescue teams continue searching through the debris for survivors as authorities assess the full scale of the catastrophe.
Trejo had earlier made an emotional public appeal for help after losing contact with his family, hoping they had escaped the collapsed building.
Those hopes were dashed when rescuers confirmed the discovery of their bodies beneath the debris.
