Nigerian comedian Kevin Chinedu, popularly known as Kevinblak, has revealed that officials of a political party once offered him foreign currency to alter his satirical skits critical of politicians and governance.
He made the disclosure during an interview on ARISE TV’s Arise 360 programme, where he spoke on the pressures faced by content creators who use humour to hold public officials accountable.
Chinedu, widely recognised for his fictional character “Governor Amuneke,” said the offer came at a particularly difficult period in his life, shortly after his wife underwent a Caesarean section, leaving him under financial strain.
“They said they were going to change my life, that I’m earning crumbs… give me dollars. They mentioned that my colleagues are in the game and all of that,” he said.
The comedian declined to name the political party involved, referring to it only as “Amuneke’s party,” a nod to his satirical persona, while warning against attempts to publicly identify those behind the offer.
“Don’t mention names, trust me, don’t mention names,” he added.
Despite the financial pressure, Chinedu said he rejected the proposal, noting that he was invited to Abuja with promises of a life-changing reward.
“I had a lot of bills on my head and I just heard, ‘come to Abuja, let’s change your life — dollars upon dollars,’” he said.
He explained that he remained firm in his decision, guided by personal principles he has upheld throughout his career.
“I looked at it and said, no — I am who I am. I’ve been here for a long time, and I’ve never been involved in anything illegal or done something because I was influenced by money.
“If I choose to do something, it has to be because I want to, not because of financial pressure,” he said.
Chinedu also noted that his close associates share similar values, revealing that some of them had been approached with similar offers and turned them down.
“I don’t have friends that are easily overwhelmed with money. I have people with principles… they’ve approached them too, and we always talk about it,” he added.
