The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Osun State has cautioned Governor Ademola Adeleke against what it described as illegal interference in the administration of motor parks amid the lingering leadership crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The warning follows Governor Adeleke’s directive suspending NURTW activities across motor parks in the state, issued shortly after local government council chairmen appointed caretaker committees to oversee transport unions.
ALGON, through its representative, Idowu, argued that under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the establishment, control, maintenance and regulation of public motor parks are the exclusive constitutional responsibilities of local government councils.
The association maintained that the governor lacks the legal authority to suspend the activities of transport unions or assume control of motor park administration.
It therefore described the governor’s directive suspending NURTW operations as unconstitutional, null and void, insisting that it undermines the rule of law.
ALGON also called on security agencies to act strictly in accordance with the provisions of the law while addressing the ongoing dispute.
