The purported plan by the governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti to place taxes on signposts of churches has sparked up controversies among the religious body in the state.

In a petition signed by the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State chapter, Reverend Ojo Oduma with the Secretary, Reverend Francis E. Ekere, dated October 22, 2024 and addressed to Governor Alex Otti titled, “Taxation of churches signposts in Abia State”, they said they are appealing to the governor of the state to back down on its implementation.

The protest letter of the association, said it’s regrettable that God’s own Abia State is the only State in the whole Federation that is taxing churches on their signposts.

“We therefore passionately plead with your Excellency as a matter of urgency, to look into the matter and possibly rescind this policy to avoid compelling the body of Christ in the State from seeing this regime as being anti church”.

CAN also requested for a meeting with Governor Otti and leaders of CAN to discuss the way forward on what it termed “very little, but delicate issue”.
