The Lagos State House of Assembly has said that resorting to protests and violence due to the current economic challenges in the country won’t solve underlying issues but could regress the nation’s progress.
Amid the economic hardship, protests have erupted in various states like Niger, Kano, and Ibadan. To address the situation, the House urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to convene an immediate stakeholders’ meeting to tackle the residents’ current hardships with sustainable solutions beyond temporary relief measures.
During Tuesday’s plenary, Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, emphasized that the ongoing economic downturn isn’t solely President Bola Tinubu’s or Governor Sanwo-Olu’s fault, highlighting the need for collective efforts to resolve the challenges.
Obasa stressed the importance of avoiding protests and violence, asserting that they won’t yield positive outcomes but would rather hinder progress. He emphasized the need for collaboration and proactive measures to mitigate the situation.
The House directed the commissioners for agriculture and transportation, as well as related agencies, to brief the House on their plans to alleviate people’s suffering.
Additionally, they discussed initiatives to engage youth through sports and education reforms to promote self-employment.
