The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed the country on high alert following a sharp rise in Ebola Virus Disease cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
NCDC Director-General Jide Idris announced the measure in a health advisory, stating that preparatory activities are underway to strengthen Nigeria’s readiness against any potential threat. He said the steps would be continually reviewed in line with the evolving epidemiological situation and public health risk assessment.
As part of enhanced surveillance, travellers arriving from countries with active Ebola transmission have been directed to complete the Health Declaration Form and comply with follow-up measures. “Passengers from all other countries are exempted from completing the form at this time,” the advisory stated.
The Centre urged Nigerians to remain vigilant for symptoms of the disease and to seek medical attention promptly where necessary. Members of the public were also advised to report any relevant travel or exposure history to health officials.
The advisory followed a dynamic risk assessment and consultations with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The NCDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians through evidence-based surveillance, preparedness and response.
In the DRC, authorities reported 7,672 confirmed Ebola cases and 3,699 deaths as of September 20, 2026. The latest update showed 886 patients hospitalised in isolation, with 58 new confirmed cases and 23 additional deaths recorded since the previous report.
