WHO Traces Contacts of Hantavirus Infected Cruise Passengers

The World Health Organization on Tuesday said it is tracing passengers who were on a flight from Saint Helena to Johannesburg after a cruise ship passenger died from hantavirus.

According to the agency, the Dutch woman had disembarked on the island of Saint Helena on April 24 with gastrointestinal symptoms. Her husband had earlier died from the same virus aboard the cruise ship, which remains off Cape Verde.

The WHO disclosed that her condition worsened during the flight to Johannesburg, where she later died on April 26.

“Contact tracing for passengers on the flight has been initiated,” the organisation said, as it works to prevent further spread of the virus.
