Suspected armed bandits have killed six innocent farmers in a brutal attack on the Kujijiro farmlands in Kuyello District of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, plunging the community into mourning and reigniting fears over persistent insecurity in the region.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 22, 2026, while the victims were engaged in their lawful farming activities. The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) strongly condemned the attack in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Dr. Isah Muhammad, Chairman of BEPU, said, “The victims were mercilessly attacked and killed while carrying out their lawful farming activities.”
He added, “This tragic incident has once again thrown the entire Birnin Gwari community into grief and fear. It is particularly disturbing because Kuyello and other communities in Eastern Birnin Gwari have continued to suffer attacks, killings and other criminal activities despite ongoing efforts to restore peace in the area.”
The union highlighted the broader implications, warning that unchecked violence threatens food security. Dr. Muhammad stated, “As long as any part of Birnin Gwari remains unsafe, true peace cannot be said to exist. We are deeply worried that if urgent and decisive action is not taken to stop these attacks, many farmers may become afraid to return to their farms this season. Such a situation will not only affect Birnin Gwari but may also lead to reduced food production, higher food prices and economic difficulties across Kaduna State and other parts of Northern Nigeria.”
BEPU called on the Federal and Kaduna State Governments, along with security agencies including the Minister of Defence, National Security Adviser, Nigerian Armed Forces, and Nigeria Police Force, to intensify operations in the area and eliminate the criminal elements. The union urged greater attention to Eastern Birnin Gwari through strengthened security presence.
In a message of condolence, the statement read, “Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their loved ones in this painful attack. We pray that God grants eternal rest to the deceased and gives their families the strength to bear this great loss.”
BEPU appealed to residents to remain calm, united, and cooperative with security agencies while committing to ongoing collaboration for lasting peace.
This latest attack shows the continuing security challenges in parts of Kaduna State, despite previous efforts to curb banditry.
