Legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle has died at the age of 92 in Mumbai, bringing to a close a career that spanned more than eight decades and shaped generations of music lovers.
Her family confirmed she passed away following a recent hospitalisation for a chest infection. Funeral arrangements are expected to take place in Mumbai on Monday.
Bhosle, widely celebrated for her versatility, built a vast catalogue across multiple genres and languages, becoming one of the most recorded artists in history. Over the course of her career, she recorded more than 11,000 songs and was recognised by Guinness World Records in 2011.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to her legacy, describing her career as an “extraordinary musical journey” that enriched cultural heritage and resonated with audiences worldwide. “Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance,” he said.
She was honoured with some of India’s highest accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. Bhosle also received international recognition, earning Grammy nominations and collaborating with global artists such as Boy George.
The younger sister of iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar, Bhosle began performing at a young age and went on to become a defining voice in Indian cinema, particularly in Bollywood music.
Tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry. Actor Shah Rukh Khan said her voice would continue to resonate for generations, while actress Hema Malini described her as an artist who brought energy and character to every performance.
Bhosle’s influence extended far beyond film music, with her work spanning classical, pop, folk and international collaborations, cementing her status as one of the most influential singers in Indian music history.
