Former Vice President Kamala Harris has come out swinging against President Donald Trump’s decision to launch military strikes on Iran, describing the act as reckless, unnecessary and a betrayal of the promises Trump made to the American people during his campaign.
In a formal statement released on February 28, 2026, Harris was blunt in her criticism. “Donald Trump is dragging the United States into a war the American people do not want,” she said, adding that American troops are being put in harm’s way for what she described as a war of choice rather than necessity.
Harris made clear she is not opposed to confronting the threat Iran poses particularly on the question of nuclear weapons. “I know the threat that Iran poses, and they must never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon,” she acknowledged. But she insisted that the military strikes were not the right way to dismantle that threat, describing the action as a dangerous and unnecessary gamble with American lives that also risks destabilising the countries and damaging America’s standing in the world.
She went further, accusing Trump of lying to the American public on two separate occasions. During his campaign, she noted, Trump promised to end wars rather than start them. Last year, she said, he claimed to have obliterated Iran’s nuclear programme. “That, too, was a lie,” she stated.
Harris also raised a constitutional argument, reminding Trump that under the United States Constitution, the President must receive authorisation from Congress before entering a war, a step she implied was not properly taken. She called on Congress to use all available power to prevent Trump from deepening American involvement in the conflict.
She and her husband Doug, she said, would be praying for all servicemen and women, whom she described as undertaking dangerous missions with exceptional skill, discipline and precision. She used the moment to draw a contrast with the President, arguing that American troops deserve a Commander-in-Chief who approaches decisions on war and peace with the same steadiness they show every day.
