Mass Protests in Madrid Call for Spanish Prime Minister’s Resignation

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Madrid demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, amid growing anger over corruption allegations linked to his government.

The demonstration, described as largely peaceful, turned tense in parts as clashes broke out between police and a small group of protesters attempting to breach security barriers near the prime minister’s residence. Authorities reported that at least seven police officers were injured, and three individuals were arrested.

The protest, dubbed a “March for Dignity,” drew support from opposition groups including the conservative People’s Party and the far-right Vox party, which played a key role in organizing the rally. Demonstrators waved national flags and carried banners calling for the government to step down.

Tensions have been fueled by recent investigations involving political figures connected to the ruling Socialist Party. Former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is reportedly under investigation over alleged corruption, though he has denied any wrongdoing.

The current prime minister has also faced scrutiny over a past investigation involving his wife, which he maintains was politically motivated. Prosecutors have since moved to close that case.

Estimates of turnout varied, with organizers claiming around 80,000 participants, while government officials put the figure closer to 40,000.
