Pope Vows To Continue Speaking Out On War Despite Trump Criticism

Pope Leo said he will continue to speak publicly against war and advocate for peace, following sharp criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking to reporters during a flight to Algeria at the start of an African tour, the pontiff said he would not engage in a public dispute but insisted that the message of the Gospel should not be misused for political purposes.

He said the Church’s role is to promote peace and dialogue, adding that global conflicts are causing widespread suffering. “Too many innocent people are being killed,” he said, stressing that international cooperation and diplomacy remain essential to resolving conflicts.

The comments come after Trump described the pope as “terrible” in a social media post, criticizing his views on foreign policy and immigration. The remarks drew backlash from some Catholic commentators and religious leaders.

Pope Leo, the first U.S.-born pontiff, has recently become more vocal in his criticism of the ongoing conflict involving Iran and has repeatedly called for restraint, warning against the humanitarian consequences of war.

Despite political pressure, he said he intends to continue speaking out, adding that his message is centered on peace rather than political debate.

The pope is currently undertaking his first major overseas trip since taking office last year, visiting several African countries over an 11-day tour focused on diplomacy, peacebuilding, and interfaith engagement.
