Shooter Killed by Police After Deadly Attack in Kyiv Leaves Five Dead

Police in Kyiv shot and killed a gunman who opened fire in a city district before barricading himself inside a supermarket, in an incident that left at least five people dead.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack occurred in the Holosiivskyi district, with 10 others injured and receiving treatment in hospital. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed the death toll and said special police units stormed the building after the suspect took hostages and fired at officers.

Authorities stated that negotiators initially attempted to engage the attacker before the situation escalated. The suspect was eventually killed during the police operation.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko later reported that one of the injured victims, a woman, died in hospital, raising the overall death toll.

According to Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, the suspect was a 58-year-old man originally from Moscow. Four victims were killed on the street, while one died inside the supermarket where the gunman had taken refuge.

Authorities also noted that a fire broke out at the suspect’s registered residence in the city, though further details on that development remain unclear.
