Police in the United Kingdom are facing growing criticism following the handling of an incident in which an 18-year-old student was handcuffed while suffering from fatal stab wounds.
The case has sparked public outrage after body-camera footage showed Henry Nowak repeatedly telling officers he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe. One officer initially appeared to doubt the seriousness of his condition before emergency aid was later provided.
The controversy intensified after Vickrum Digwa, a 23-year-old man convicted of the killing, received a life sentence. During the incident, Digwa reportedly told officers that he had been attacked and subjected to racist abuse, claims that were later found to be false.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the incident raises significant questions about police decision-making and whether allegations of racism influenced how officers assessed the situation. He stressed that a full explanation is needed after the release of the footage.
The case has generated political debate across Britain, with some public figures arguing that concerns about accusations of racism may have affected police actions. Others have urged restraint, warning against using the tragedy to deepen social divisions or inflame tensions.
Nowak’s family described the treatment he received as degrading and deeply distressing. However, his father appealed for calm, asking that his son’s death not be used to promote hatred or further polarization.
The police force involved has apologised for its handling of the incident. Authorities confirmed that one officer connected to the case has resigned, while several others are participating in an ongoing investigation into police conduct.
The case has also prompted demonstrations in Southampton, where protesters gathered outside a local police station demanding accountability and transparency. Officials have urged the public to allow the investigative process to proceed while maintaining public order.
Meanwhile, legal authorities are reviewing requests for a reconsideration of the minimum term attached to Digwa’s sentence, following calls from members of the public for a tougher punishment.
The investigation into the officers’ actions remains ongoing, with findings expected to determine whether any disciplinary or legal measures will follow.
