US Puts Negotiations With Iran on Hold as Ceasefire Deadline Nears

Diplomatic meeting held between the United States and Iran, on the 21st of April, 2026 have stalled just hours before a critical ceasefire deadline, raising fears of a renewed military escalation.

President Donald Trump reiterated on Tuesday that he has no intention of extending the ceasefire deadline set for Wednesday evening Eastern Time, warning that he expects “to be bombing” if a deal is not reached in time.

The announcement came as a second round of peace talks brokered with Pakistan’s assistance remained in serious doubt, with both sides trading accusations over violations and mixed signals clouding the path forward.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry cited what it called “provocative actions” and continued ceasefire violations by the United States as a major obstacle to continuing diplomacy, while Iranian negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf accused Trump of seeking to turn the negotiating table into “a table of surrender or to justify renewed warmongering.”

Adding further tension, the US Navy seized an Iranian cargo vessel over the weekend, prompting Iran’s Foreign Ministry to demand its release along with that of its crew and their families, and to vow retaliation. Iran has also pointed to what it describes as contradictory messages from Washington as justification for its hesitation to attend the next round of talks.

On the US side, officials signaled continued willingness to engage but offered little reassurance to Tehran. Vice President JD Vance, who had been expected to depart Tuesday for Pakistan ahead of a potential second round of talks, remained in Washington for meetings, according to sources.

Trump also took to social media to demand the release of eight women he said were imprisoned by the Iranian regime, calling it a gesture that would be “a great start” to negotiations.

Iran had previously rejected a 45-day two-phased ceasefire framework introduced by Pakistan, proposing instead its own 10-point peace plan a sign of how wide the gap between the two sides remains as the clock ticks down.
