In a late-night announcement, the Federal Government revealed that organized labour has decided to cancel the planned nationwide protest set for Tuesday. The demonstration was in response to the recent increase in tariffs approved for telecommunications companies.

This development came after a crucial meeting involving federal government officials and leaders from organized labour. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, shared the news following the discussions.

The government’s team was headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, while the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was represented by its President, Joe Ajaero.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the establishment of a 10-member committee, with equal representation from both sides. This group aims to scrutinize the tariff hike report and develop solutions that cater to both telecom operators and consumers.

“The committee is expected to submit its findings in two weeks,” Idris stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to a swift resolution.

This move indicates a temporary de-escalation in tensions, with both parties showing willingness to negotiate and find common ground on the contentious issue of telecom tariffs.
