A catastrophic tanker explosion at Dan Magaji, Zaria, killed several people on Monday morning, leaving a trail of destruction along the Kaduna-Kano expressway bypass.
The incident, reported around 8:30 AM near Rochas Foundation School, involved a collision between two fuel-laden tankers and two passenger-filled Golf cars, according to eyewitnesses.
The collision sparked five deafening explosions, followed by a massive fire that sent thick black smoke billowing across the highway, halting traffic and creating chaos. “All the occupants of the cars died on the spot, except one driver who survived but sustained severe burns,” a witness recounted, highlighting the tragedy’s severity.
Emergency services and security personnel swiftly cordoned off the area, launching rescue and recovery operations.
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the route to facilitate ongoing efforts and ensure safety.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of lives in this preventable disaster, with calls for stricter measures to avert future tragedies.
