A magistrate court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the car crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua.
The case was postponed to 25 February 2026 after Kayode appeared in court on Tuesday for the continuation of his trial.
Kayode was charged by the Ogun State Police Command on 2 January with four offences, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
Earlier, the magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, granted him bail of ₦5 million with two sureties. He was remanded in a correctional facility pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, told the court that three of the four prosecution witnesses were present. The witnesses were officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
The prosecutor requested an adjournment to allow the case file to be duplicated and sent to the Ogun State Attorney-General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice. Defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the request, arguing that the trial should begin since witnesses were already in court.
However, the magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and adjourned the case to 25 February, directing that the case file be forwarded to the Attorney-General.
The case stems from a road accident on 29 December 2025, when a Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and his associates collided with a stationary truck near the Sinoma area of Sagamu. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Lagos at the time.
Joshua survived the crash with minor injuries, but two of his associates Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami were killed. Ghami was the boxer’s long-time friend and strength coach, while Latif served as his personal trainer.
Anthony Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, on 31 December after receiving treatment.
