As Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, marks his 92nd birthday, encomiums have continued to pour in for the revered elder statesman, philanthropist and business icon, with Rev. Fr. Dr. Andrew Obinyan describing him as a living legend whose enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations.
In a glowing birthday tribute, Obinyan said Igbinedion’s 92 years have been defined by an extraordinary blend of vision, resilience, service, philanthropy and an unwavering commitment to humanity.
He described the Esama as a rare personality who has successfully transcended four generations, remaining influential and relevant in the present while earning the admiration, respect and affection of those who came before him.
According to Obinyan, Igbinedion’s remarkable ability to remain a formidable force across generations is a reflection of his exceptional character, immense contributions to society and lifelong dedication to advancing the welfare of humanity.
“God has bestowed upon you an uncommon crown of glory, honour and distinction,” Obinyan said, describing Igbinedion’s life as a testament to greatness anchored in service and humanity.
Obinyan praised the Esama for his uncommon accessibility, noting that while influence often creates barriers, Igbinedion has consistently used his position to build bridges.
“Where others erect walls of protocol, you have opened doors,” he said.
According to him, the Esama’s accessibility has made it possible for people from different walks of life to approach him without unnecessary barriers.
“Your doors remain open, and your heart remains accessible to people from every walk of life,” he added.
Obinyan said this quality has distinguished Igbinedion and strengthened his bond with successive generations.
The cleric also commended the Esama for remaining humble despite his wealth, influence and social standing.
He noted that Igbinedion had not allowed his accomplishments to alienate him from ordinary people, but had instead retained the ability to make those he encounters feel valued, welcomed and respected.
“Your life reminds us that true greatness is not measured by how far one rises above others, but by how closely one remains connected to them,” Obinyan stated.
He described the combination of humility and generosity as one of the defining qualities of the Esama’s enduring appeal.
According to Obinyan, the greatest measure of Igbinedion’s legacy lies not merely in monuments, institutions or material accomplishments, but in the lives transformed by his generosity.
He said the Esama’s philanthropy had created opportunities, supported communities and inspired hope among countless individuals.
“Your legacy, therefore, is not merely contained in monuments, institutions, or material accomplishments.
“It is inscribed in the lives you have touched, the opportunities you have created, and the generations you have inspired,” he said.
Obinyan added that few individuals leave footprints as profound and enduring as those of the Esama.
The cleric expressed confidence that Igbinedion’s story would continue to resonate long after the present generation.
“History will remember you. Future generations will study your journey,” he said, noting that those who had benefited from the Esama’s kindness and generosity would continue to tell his story.
He described it as a privilege to belong to a generation that had witnessed Igbinedion’s remarkable journey and benefited immensely from his vision, wisdom, benevolence and humanity.
He prayed that Almighty God would continue to preserve him in sound health, grant him peace of mind and renew his strength.
He also prayed for greater joy, fulfilment and abundant grace as he advances into the years ahead.
