Lagos Shuts Eko Bridge for Emergency Repairs

The Lagos State Government has announced the immediate closure of the outbound carriageway of the Eko Bridge for urgent safety inspections and repair works.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying the closure will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The affected section runs from Apongbon to Ijora Olopa outbound toward Lagos Island.

Osiyemi explained that the temporary shutdown is necessary to carry out critical structural assessments and maintenance to safeguard road users and preserve the bridge’s integrity.

Motorists heading toward Lagos Island have been advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the repair period. The inward carriageway to Lagos Island will, however, remain open throughout the exercise.

“The inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists,” the commissioner stated.

He assured residents that adequate traffic management measures have been implemented to ease congestion.

“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” Osiyemi added.

The commissioner appealed for public cooperation and patience, stressing that the intervention is essential for public safety.

He described the repairs as necessary “to guarantee public safety and preserve critical transport infrastructure in the state.”

The development is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in the coming days, with authorities urging motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.
