Switzerland has returned 18 looted Benin artefacts and five additional Nigerian cultural objects to Nigeria under a landmark restitution agreement, marking another significant milestone in the global effort to restore Africa’s looted heritage.

The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday in Lagos, where Nigeria and Switzerland also signed a bilateral agreement, reaffirming their commitment to cultural cooperation and the restitution of stolen heritage.

The bilateral agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation in combating the illicit trafficking of cultural property and facilitating future returns.

Hanatu Musa Musawa, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, Olugbile Holloway and Dr Alice Hertzog are among officials involved at the ceremony.
