The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested eight suspects linked to the violent unrest at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area that left two people dead and another injured.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Lawan Shiisu Adam disclosed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday, saying they followed sustained intelligence-led operations.
The crisis began on July 26 after a misunderstanding between a soldier, Nura Bashir, and 25-year-old Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim of Miga Local Government Area. During the altercation, the soldier allegedly stabbed Biniya, who was rushed to a medical facility and later confirmed dead.
The incident sparked widespread violence. Hoodlums allegedly attacked a police station, fired bows and arrows at security personnel, and set two thatched shops ablaze in the market.
Two suspects, Muhammed Muhammed, 22, of Gagarawa Local Government Area, and Faridu Mohammed, were arrested for allegedly taking part in the attack. Efforts continue to track down other fleeing accomplices.
In a related incident on August 2, six more suspects were arrested for allegedly attacking two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses during the same unrest. One vigilante died from his injuries while the second is receiving treatment.
Those arrested are Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55; Yahaya Habu, 31; Ibrahim Abubakar, 30; Audu Mamman Janare, 30; Ya’u Duga, 65; and Mamman Musa, 20, from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama and Jahun Local Government Areas.
Police also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the violence.
SP Adam said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances and ensure all those involved are brought to justice. A stakeholder engagement involving Miyetti Allah leaders, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies and youth representatives is under way to address the root causes of the crisis and prevent a recurrence.
The Commissioner of Police commended officers and other security stakeholders for their professionalism and swift response. He assured residents that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property and will deal decisively with anyone found engaging in criminal activities.
The command urged the public to remain calm, law-abiding and continue supporting the police with timely and credible information.
