CROSS RIVER, CALABAR – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has received two awards recognizing its role in breast cancer awareness and community engagement at a rally in Calabar.

The council received the Black Opal Award for Most Resourceful Organization and the Titanium Award for Most Engaging Organization at the breast cancer awareness rally organised by Pink Africa Foundation in partnership with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

A statement by the state chairman of NUJ Comrade Bassey Archiving, said the awards recognize the council’s reported contributions to breast cancer advocacy, including the mobilisation of resources, expertise and volunteers, as well as efforts to promote public participation and strengthen community connections.

Reacting to the recognition, NUJ Cross River State Council Chairperson expressed excitement over the double honours, describing them as an encouraging moment during her tenure.

“This is so exciting. I am so honoured that in my tenure, NUJ brought two awards in one day. What can I say? Thank you, Jesus,” Bassey said.

She thanked Pink Africa Foundation and UICC for recognising the council, adding that the awards reflected the value of efforts made by members through their professional and community engagements.

Bassey also encouraged journalists to remain committed to their responsibilities, noting that seemingly small actions could make a difference in people’s lives and attract recognition beyond their immediate environment.

“Let us keep our candle burning in our secret little corners because you don’t know who is watching. You don’t know whose life you are impacting,” she said.

The NUJ chairperson said the recognition showed that the council’s activities were being noticed and appreciated, while describing the awards as a source of encouragement following what she characterised as a difficult preceding week.

She reaffirmed the council’s willingness to sustain collaboration with organisations working to improve breast cancer awareness and support related advocacy initiatives.

The recognition places the NUJ Cross River State Council among organisations acknowledged at the rally for their engagement with breast cancer awareness efforts.
