NIGERIA, ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a revised timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, fixing the presidential election for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
The electoral umpire disclosed that the adjustment followed a comprehensive review of its election schedule to ensure compliance with constitutional provisions and statutory timelines governing electoral processes in the country.
The new dates replace the earlier timetable which had scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 2027.
According to the Commission, political party primaries for the 2027 elections are expected to commence on April 23, 2026, and conclude on May 30, 2026, allowing sufficient time for the resolution of internal party disputes and submission of candidates’ names.
Campaign activities for presidential and National Assembly candidates are slated to begin on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for governorship and State Assembly elections will commence on September 9, 2026, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act.

INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and inclusive elections, urging political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, and voters to strictly adhere to the approved electoral timetable.
