Assault scandal: Police Grant Bail To Edo governor’s Ally, Ebo Stone, After Arrest

Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

The planned arraignment of Mr. Kelly Okungbowa, popularly known as Ebo Stone and a close political ally of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, has been postponed due to the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Law Week activities.

‎Okungbowa, who is a political ally of Okpebholo, was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Edo state Police command over alleged assault of a police officer on duty.

It was learned that the suspect was scheduled to be arraigned in court this week. However, sources within the police command revealed that the annual Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Law Week activities disrupted court proceedings, leading to a postponement of the arraignment.

Recall that ‎Okungbowa was reportedly arrested on May 30, 2026, along the Upper Sakponba axis of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, where he was said to have assaulted a police officer carrying out lawful duties.

A police source who preferred anonymity said the suspect had been granted bail.

He said the matter would proceed to court once normal judicial activities resume.

‎”The suspect has been granted administrative bail, but he will be charged to court as soon as regular court proceedings resume,” the source said.

‎Efforts to reach the Edo state Police command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, for comments were unsuccessful.

‎However, Ikoedem had earlier confirmed Okungbowa’s arrest and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, stressing that no individual is above the law.

‎She also urged members of the public to respect police officers while they carry out their lawful duty.
