Blackout: EDHA Invites BEDC, To Seek Clarification On Why Transformers Donated Are Not Energized

Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

The Edo State House of Assembly has extended its summon to the management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company Plc (BEDC), asking it to appear before it on March 9, 2026, over the persistent and epileptic power supply across Edo State.

The directive was issued by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Blessing Agbebaku, during plenary on Wednesday.

The Speaker expressed deep concern over the worsening electricity situation, describing it as disheartening and unacceptable given the hardship being faced by residents and businesses in the state.

Rt. Hon. Agbebaku further noted that several members of the Assembly had facilitated the provision of transformers to their respective communities to improve electricity access.

However, reports indicate that BEDC has allegedly insisted on payment before energising the newly installed transformers, further compounding the challenges faced by citizens.

The House resolved to seek detailed clarification from the company’s management regarding the current power supply situation and the conditions for energising community-provided transformers.

Lawmakers also indicated their commitment to exploring appropriate legislative and oversight measures to ensure improved service delivery and relief for residents.

The House thereafter adjourned plenary to Monday, March 9, 2026.

Recall that Truth Live News Media reports that Organized Edo Against BEDC Oppressions” group had given the company 14 days ultimatum to fix the issue of light and halt estimated billings in the state or face mass unrest.

Truth Live News Media reports also that at the expiration of the 14 days ultimatum, the group came out in their large numbers to protest and was joined by the state governor, Monday Okpebholo who promised to break the company’s monopoly.
