FG Starts Payment of Outstanding Scholarships to Nigerian Students Abroad

The Federal Government has commenced the release of overdue scholarship allowances owed to Nigerian students studying overseas under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scheme.

In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, officials confirmed that funds for the 2025 outstanding payments have been partially disbursed. The Central Bank of Nigeria has already transferred the approved amounts to Nigerian embassies and diplomatic missions, which are now responsible for paying eligible students.

According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the funds released so far represent 50 percent of the total outstanding obligations. He added that steps are underway to settle the remaining balance.

Students benefiting from the programme have been advised to check their accounts, as payments are expected to begin reflecting immediately through their respective embassies.

The BEA scholarship programme, although now discontinued, was designed to support Nigerian students studying in partner countries by providing financial assistance. In recent months, many beneficiaries had raised concerns over delayed payments, citing the financial strain caused by the backlog.

The government stated that this latest disbursement is intended to ease the burden on affected students and reaffirm its commitment to supporting education and student welfare.

Officials also noted that the move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen human capital development and ensure Nigerian students abroad receive the support they need to succeed academically.
