The Initiative for Ethical Nigeria, Edo State Chapter, has called on the Federal Government, state governments, political leaders, and security agencies to take proactive steps to prevent political harassment, intimidation, and violence as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The State Coordinator of the group, Mr. Frank Evbuomwan, made the appeal in a statement made available to journalists in Benin City.
Evbuomwan emphasized the need for all stakeholders to uphold democratic values, foster a peaceful political atmosphere, and safeguard citizens against politically motivated attacks as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to intensify.
According to him, Nigeria must prioritize peaceful political engagement and ensure that all actors are able to participate in the democratic process without fear of intimidation or violence.
He cited reports of alleged threats and attacks involving the family of Pastor Clement Osazee Osayomore, claiming they were forced to flee Benin City and are currently living in exile.
He also referred to previous claims that Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt during a visit to Edo State.
Evbuomwan noted that while some of these incidents remain matters of public allegation, they underscore the importance of thorough investigations and prompt action by relevant authorities to strengthen public confidence in the nation’s democratic institutions.
He urged security agencies to remain impartial and vigilant in protecting all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, and called on political parties and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns rather than resort to intimidation or violence.
He further stressed that respect for human life, the rule of law, and accountability are essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
He appealed to governments at all levels to foster an environment where political participation is peaceful, inclusive, and guided by democratic principles.
He added that preventing political violence and ensuring justice for victims of unlawful acts would foster national unity, strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions, and reinforce trust in the electoral process as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
