The Rivers State House of Assembly has failed to reconvene for plenary, one week after adjourning its sitting to Thursday, January 15.
The assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had last met during its first legislative session of 2026, where lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
The impeachment move was based on allegations of gross misconduct, including claims relating to the destruction of the state assembly complex and the disbursement of funds without legislative approval.
At the end of that session, the House adjourned proceedings, announcing it would resume on January 15.
However, reports from the assembly’s temporary meeting venue, the conference hall of the legislative quarters along Aba Road indicated that lawmakers did not gather as scheduled. As of midday on Thursday, there were no signs of any plenary session taking place.
The leadership of the Assembly has not given any public explanation for the failure to sit, nor has it announced a new date for resumption.
The delay adds to growing uncertainty surrounding the impeachment process, which has already faced setbacks amid reports that some lawmakers are withdrawing support for the move.
