The Kano State Government has set aside N1.5 billion for a mass wedding programme involving 1,500 couples across the state.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said the initiative fulfills Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s campaign promise to support marriages and strengthen family values.
Daurawa revealed that all prospective couples are currently undergoing mandatory medical screenings, including tests for HIV, hepatitis, genotype compatibility and pregnancy, to ensure healthy and sustainable unions.
He further disclosed that each couple will receive a support package worth N1 million, comprising essential household items such as beds, mattresses, bed sheets, pillows, cupboards and foodstuffs to help them begin married life on a stable footing.
He added that each bride would get N100,000 as capital to start up a small-scale business while each groom would receive N100,000 to assist him with marriage dowry payments.
Daurawa said preparations for the mass wedding have been completed, and the Hisbah Board is now awaiting Governor Yusuf’s announcement of the official date for the ceremony.
