The Lagos State Government says it plans to introduce special vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to improve accessibility and promote inclusion.
The initiative is being developed through a partnership between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA). Officials from both agencies recently met to discuss how the disability-friendly vehicle identification system will be implemented.
The proposed number plates are expected to improve the recognition, mobility and accessibility of people with disabilities across the state.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the proposal as a major step towards building a more inclusive Lagos.
“This is indeed a laudable initiative that aligns perfectly with the principles of inclusive governance,” he said.
Mr Muri-Okunola said the special number plates would enhance visibility for people with disabilities while supporting a transport system that caters to everyone.
“We are committed to supporting this process and are confident that the collaboration between our agencies will yield positive results,” he added.
He also revealed that discussions had already begun with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the introduction of the new number plates. According to him, the agency will begin the necessary administrative procedures to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.
The General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the proposal is intended to meet the needs of all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents and caregivers of children living with disabilities.
She said the new identification system would improve recognition, accessibility and support for members of the disability community.
“The proposed initiative is another practical step towards creating a more accessible and equitable society,” she said.
Mrs Oyetunde-Lawal urged government agencies and other stakeholders to work together to promote disability inclusion, adding that building a society where people with disabilities are recognised, respected and fully included is a shared responsibility.
The Lagos State Government says the initiative forms part of its wider commitment to ensuring that no resident is left behind in accessing public services and transportation.
