MASSOB Praise Observance of Biafra Day Sit-at-Home Across South-East

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has expressed satisfaction with the level of participation in its sit-at-home exercise held to mark the 59th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra.

In a statement released on Saturday, the group’s leadership commended residents across the South-East and some neighbouring communities for what it described as widespread compliance with the directive.

According to MASSOB leader Uchenna Madu, the action reflected the commitment of many people to remembering those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War and preserving the history associated with the Biafran struggle.

He said the observance demonstrated solidarity among supporters of the cause and reinforced calls for continued remembrance activities throughout the region.

Madu also encouraged churches and religious organisations to continue organising prayer sessions, thanksgiving services, and memorial events in honour of those affected by the conflict.

Across parts of the South-East, commercial activities were significantly reduced during the exercise. Reports from several locations indicated that many businesses, public institutions, and transportation services remained inactive throughout the day.

In Enugu, major roads witnessed minimal traffic, while government offices and private establishments recorded low activity. Religious centres, however, remained open in some areas, with worshippers attending special services dedicated to remembering victims of the civil war.

The development came despite warnings from the Nigerian Army, which had earlier advised residents and religious institutions against complying with directives it described as unlawful.

Military authorities maintained that any gathering or activity outside officially recognised national commemorations could pose security concerns and urged citizens to continue their normal routines. The Army also assured residents of adequate protection and pledged to maintain peace and order across the region.

The differing positions highlight the continuing debate surrounding Biafra remembrance activities, with supporters viewing them as a means of preserving historical memory while authorities remain focused on maintaining security and public order.
