What began as a solemn funeral gathering in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, reportedly turned into a shocking tragedy when a pastor collapsed and died while preaching about death.
Deacon Steve Eyo, a resident pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), was addressing more than 300 mourners during the burial ceremony.
His sermon, titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond,” focused on the shortness and uncertainty of human life.
Eyo reportedly began preaching at about 1:10 p.m. and used the analogy of a visit to the market to explain that people do not leave life at the same time, just as people arrive and leave the market at different times.
But about 15 minutes into his sermon, the unexpected happened.
As he was concluding his message, Eyo reportedly collapsed in front of the mourners.
He was immediately given first aid and later rushed to a hospital in an ambulance that had been hired for the burial.
Despite the efforts to save him, the pastor was reportedly pronounced dead at the hospital.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as no official cause of death has been disclosed.
