Residents in Kaduna State are expressing frustration over the sharp increase in ram prices as the Eid-el-Kabir celebration approaches, with some animals now costing as much as ₦1 million in major markets.
A survey of livestock markets across Kaduna revealed that medium-sized rams are currently priced between ₦200,000 and ₦450,000. Larger or exotic breeds are being sold for anywhere from ₦700,000 up to ₦1 million, depending on size and quality.
Many locals say the rising costs have made it difficult to fulfill the traditional Sallah sacrifice, especially as households continue to battle high living expenses. Some buyers noted that even basic feeding has become challenging, making the purchase of a ram unrealistic this year.
Others shared that they are considering cheaper alternatives, such as chickens, due to the unaffordable prices.
Livestock traders, however, attribute the surge to several factors, including insecurity, high transportation costs, and the overall economic situation. According to sellers, transporting animals has become more expensive due to fuel price increases and safety concerns on major routes.
They also pointed out that cattle rustling and attacks in some northern regions have reduced the supply of livestock, further driving up prices.
As a result, many markets are seeing fewer buyers, with potential customers staying away due to reduced purchasing power.
With inflation continuing to rise and economic challenges persisting nationwide, many Nigerians say religious and cultural practices like Eid sacrifices are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.
