President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has appointed Lamido Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
In a statement on Wednesday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the appointment was made in line with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
Yuguda’s nomination follows the recent appointment of the former CBN Deputy Governor, Bala Bello, as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.
President Tinubu urged the new appointee to carry out his duties with dedication, professionalism and a strong commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.
Yuguda, an economist and financial expert, brings more than three decades of experience in banking, accounting, finance and investment management. Before this appointment, he served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
He studied accountancy at Ahmadu Bello University, graduating in 1983, and later obtained a master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
Yuguda began his career at the Central Bank in 1984 as a senior supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department, where he managed external debt records. Over the years, he held several roles in banking supervision, reserve management and financial regulation.
Between 1997 and 2001, he worked as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, where he assessed economic policies and balance-of-payments programmes for African countries.
After returning to the Central Bank, Yuguda helped restructure Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserve portfolio and later became Director of the Reserve Management Department in 2010. He retired from the bank in 2016 after more than 30 years of service.
His appointment is expected to bring additional experience to Nigeria’s central bank as the government continues efforts to stabilise the economy and strengthen the financial system.
