President Bola Tinubu is presiding over a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to formalise the appointment of Acting Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the substantive head of the force.
The closed-door meeting, which began at noon on Monday, follows the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu was appointed acting IGP last week by President Tinubu.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, said the process follows the provisions of the Police Act 2020. “President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation,” he said.
The meeting includes senior government officials, such as Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, state governors, and other statutory members of the Council.
Chaired by the President, the Nigeria Police Council also includes the governors of the country’s 36 states, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police. Established under the Police Act 2020, the Council provides strategic oversight on policing matters nationwide.
Tunji Disu, before his appointment, served as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) annex in Alagbon, Lagos State.
Disu holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University and master’s degrees in Public Administration, Criminology, and Security and Legal Psychology. He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has since held key leadership positions across the country.
His previous roles include Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, Head of the Intelligence Response Team, Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, and AIG in charge of the Special Protection Unit.
Disu confirmation is expected to ensure continuity of leadership in the Nigeria Police Force and strengthen oversight of policing operations across the country.
