Nigeria Trashes Mozambique 4–0 to Reach AFCON ’25 Quarter-Finals

The Super Eagles of Nigeria booked a commanding place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a ruthless 4–0 demolition of Mozambique in Monday’s Round of 16 encounter.

It was a one-sided affair in Morocco as Eric Chelle’s men proved too strong, too sharp, and too clinical for the Mambas, becoming the only team to score four goals at AFCON ’25 so far. Goals from Ademola Lookman, a brace by Victor Osimhen, and a thunderous strike from Akor Adams sealed Nigeria’s emphatic victory.

Nigeria struck twice within five devastating minutes in the first half to seize total control. Lookman opened the scoring in the 20th minute, expertly converting Akor Adams’ clever lay-off to register his third goal of the tournament, maintaining a remarkable record of scoring in every match he has featured in during Morocco 2025.

Barely five minutes later, Osimhen doubled the lead, arriving unmarked at the back post to tap home another Adams assist for 2–0. The Super Eagles carried their momentum into the second half, and just two minutes after the restart, Lookman and Osimhen combined again, with the Galatasaray striker finishing calmly to make it 3–0. The goal marked Osimhen’s second of the night, third of the tournament, and 34th international goal for Nigeria.

Akor Adams capped a stellar all-round performance with a goal of his own in the 75th minute, unleashing a ferocious strike into the roof of the net to complete the rout.

The victory marks Nigeria’s fourth consecutive win at AFCON ’25, a historic first for the Super Eagles in the competition. It also extends Nigeria’s dominance over Mozambique, recording a fifth straight win against the Mambas since their last AFCON meeting in 2010.

The Super Eagles will now face the winners of the Round of 16 clash between Algeria and DR Congo in what will be Nigeria’s 18th AFCON quarter-final appearance, scheduled for Saturday, January 10, at the Marrakesh Stadium.
